It is a good idea to have a brief job description for a new trustee as well as a board handbook (however formal or informal), that includes information about the foundation’s mission, its history of giving, a list of current board members and their duties, an organizational chart, grant guidelines, the foundation’s bylaws and policies, and recent financial statements (e.g., the Form 990-PF). In addition, it is important for new board members to review the minutes from recent board meetings. Some foundations have videos, websites, annual reports, or a written history that can also help new board members to become familiar with the foundation. The sample documents library
has sample board orientation materials and trustee job descriptions.
