What is the Next Gen Fellows Program?
The Next Gen Fellows Program is a six-month, cohort-based leadership development experience for emerging leaders involved in foundations. Designed for deep learning, engagement, and peer connection, the program supports participants as they grow their leadership skills and step more fully into their influence—both now and in the future.
Blending facilitated learning, peer exchange, and practitioner insight, the program helps fellows navigate the realities of philanthropic work and lead with confidence, curiosity, and intention within lean and family foundation contexts.

In This Program, You Will:
-
Be guided by fellow practitioners and philanthropic leaders
-
Learn about current and emerging practices and trends in the field
-
Try out new skills and discuss concepts in a safe and encouraging environment
-
Build a trusted peer network that offers ongoing support, ideas, and perspective
-
Reflect individually and with peers to identify opportunities for action within your philanthropic work
You’ll gain the competence and confidence to lead—in your foundation, in your community, and in your field—and return to your organization ready to ask thoughtful questions, make meaningful contributions, and strengthen your giving.
Leadership in Lean Philanthropy
A manager is handed a playbook; a leader writes the playbook. Leaders look for opportunities to solve both simple and complex challenges. In philanthropy, leadership is a mindset and a practice grounded in humility, listening, and curiosity. These qualities empower leaders – whether staff, donors, trustees, or family members – to embrace the unique abilities and powers of lean foundations and spark outsized impact. By leveraging all of their available resources and going beyond grantmaking, foundations and donors that practice catalytic leadership think and act less like funders and more like agents and facilitators of change.
During the In-Person Intensive and the Virtual Learning Series, we’ll explore these leadership qualities on both the personal and organizational levels.
Why the Next Gen Fellows Program Exists
Philanthropy is evolving, and emerging leaders are often asked to contribute ideas, steward resources, and influence decisions early in their careers or service. Yet many lack structured opportunities to reflect on leadership, build confidence, and learn alongside peers who understand the unique dynamics of foundations.
The Next Gen Fellows Program exists to meet that need. It creates space for rising leaders to explore what leadership looks like in practice—grounded in listening, humility, and equity—and to develop the skills needed to lead thoughtfully within their organizations and communities.
This program is not about having all the answers. It’s about learning how to ask better questions, build relationships, and lead with purpose wherever you are in your philanthropic journey.
Who is this Program For?
The Next Gen Fellows Program is designed for emerging leaders involved in philanthropy in a variety of roles, including foundation staff, trustees, donors, and family members. While many fellows are early in their careers or newly stepping into leadership responsibilities, all share a desire to grow their influence and lead with intention.
Fellows often join the program when they are:
-
Navigating new or evolving roles within a foundation
-
Seeking greater confidence in their leadership voice
-
Looking for a trusted peer community within philanthropy
-
Interested in catalytic and equity-centered approaches to giving
Leadership is not defined by title alone. Influence exists at every level, and this program is designed to help fellows recognize and use theirs.
