An investment policy statement (IPS) should be the starting point and bedrock of an institution’s investment strategy. The investment policy establishes return objectives, risk tolerances, and details on how the strategy should be executed and evaluated. In essence, it constitutes a road map of how the institution plans to achieve and support its stated mission through its investment strategy.
In addition to providing general guidance, an IPS is a requisite for organizations in terms of oversight and governance, and an irrefutable sign of the commitment to fulfill their fiduciary duty in overseeing investment assets.
